Tilang, Fifth Mehl, Third House:
ਕਰਤੇ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਮੁਸਤਾਕੁ ॥
करते कुदरती मुसताकु ॥
Karṯe kuḏraṯī musṯāk.
O Creator, through Your creative potency, I am in love with You.
ਦੀਨ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਏਕ ਤੂਹੀ ਸਭ ਖਲਕ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਕੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
दीन दुनीआ एक तूही सभ खलक ही ते पाकु ॥ रहाउ ॥
Ḏīn ḏunī▫ā ek ṯūhī sabẖ kẖalak hī ṯe pāk. Rahā▫o.
You alone are my spiritual and temporal Lord; and yet, You are detached from all Your creation. ||Pause||
ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਦਾ ਆਚਰਜ ਤੇਰੇ ਰੂਪ ॥
खिन माहि थापि उथापदा आचरज तेरे रूप ॥
Kẖin māhi thāp uthāpaḏā ācẖaraj ṯere rūp.
In an instant, You establish and disestablish. Wondrous is Your form!
ਕਉਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਚਲਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੇ ਮਹਿ ਦੀਪ ॥੧॥
कउणु जाणै चलत तेरे अंधिआरे महि दीप ॥१॥
Ka▫uṇ jāṇai cẖalaṯ ṯere anḏẖi▫āre mėh ḏīp. ||1||
Who can know Your play? You are the Light in the darkness. ||1||
ਖੁਦਿ ਖਸਮ ਖਲਕ ਜਹਾਨ ਅਲਹ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
खुदि खसम खलक जहान अलह मिहरवान खुदाइ ॥
Kẖuḏ kẖasam kẖalak jahān alah miharvān kẖuḏā▫e.
You are the Master of Your creation, the Lord of all the world, O Merciful Lord God.
ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਜਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਅਰਾਧੇ ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਦੋਜਕਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
दिनसु रैणि जि तुधु अराधे सो किउ दोजकि जाइ ॥२॥
Ḏinas raiṇ jė ṯuḏẖ arāḏẖe so ki▫o ḏojak jā▫e. ||2||
One who worships You day and night - why should he have to go to hell? ||2||
ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਯਾਰੁ ਬੰਦੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
अजराईलु यारु बंदे जिसु तेरा आधारु ॥
Ajrā▫īl yār banḏe jis ṯerā āḏẖār.
Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death, is the friend of the human being who has Your support, Lord.
ਗੁਨਹ ਉਸ ਕੇ ਸਗਲ ਆਫੂ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਦੀਦਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
गुनह उस के सगल आफू तेरे जन देखहि दीदारु ॥३॥
Gunah us ke sagal āfū ṯere jan ḏekẖėh ḏīḏār. ||3||
His sins are all forgiven; Your humble servant gazes upon Your Vision. ||3||
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਚੀਜ ਫਿਲਹਾਲ ਸਗਲੇ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
दुनीआ चीज फिलहाल सगले सचु सुखु तेरा नाउ ॥
Ḏunī▫ā cẖīj filhāl sagle sacẖ sukẖ ṯerā nā▫o.
All worldly considerations are for the present only. True peace comes only from Your Name.
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਏਕਸੁ ਗਾਉ ॥੪॥੪॥
गुर मिलि नानक बूझिआ सदा एकसु गाउ ॥४॥४॥
Gur mil Nānak būjẖi▫ā saḏā ekas gā▫o. ||4||4||
Meeting the Guru, Nanak understands; He sings only Your Praises forever, O Lord. ||4||4||

The hukamnama today is by Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Tilang on Ang 724 of Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.
Today’s hukamnamma is in Tilang Raag, and is by Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It’s in the third house of taals. Tilang raag has a quality of praise for the Almighty Lord, Who feels out of our reach, but continuing to praise Him, continuing to adore Him even though that Waheguru, that eternal light, feels out of reach. The tilaang raag has a persistency about it. The persistency of the seeker, the persistence of the Sikh, who is calling out for her beloved, his beloved, despite this feeling that her beloved is beyond her reach.
Kartay kudratee mustaak.
Oh Creator, kartay (like Kartah Purakh from the Mool Mantra). I look at your creation kudratee and I fall in love with you. Now, many times we look at creation and we fall in love with the creation, rather than our Creator Lord. Guru ji is telling us, today’s meditation for the Sikhs across the globe, is to see God within creation. Not just to see our car standing outside, to see the trees in our garden, not just to see our family. But to see the Creator, the Divine spark, within everything. Kartay kudratee mustaak. I fall in love with You, through your creation. As in the beginning of Rehraas it says, balihaaree kudrat vasi-aa. tayraa ant na jaa-ee lakhi-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.(Ang 469-10) I am a sacrifice to you, the Creator, who created this earth and is within everything. God not only created the creation, God is within everything.
Deen dunee-aa ayk toohee sabh khalak hee tay paak.
Deen dunee-aa ayk toohee. Deen dunee-aa spiritually, and on a physical, temporal basis as well, You are the only One. Ayk toohee. You are the only One. Sabh khalak means the whole creation. Khalak means creation. Hee tay paak. Paak means pure, means Divine. You are the spiritual and temporal Lord, the One Divine spark within creation, and yet You are beyond the creation. You are the Divine Light that takes us within the form and into the formless. The frequency of God, the vibration of Akal Purakh, is this pure Divine vibration. God is not tarred by the pollution of the world (physical and spiritual).
Rahaa-o.
Pause and meditate on this line.
Khin maahi thaap uthaapadaa aacharaj tayray roop.
In an instant khin, in less than a second. Khin literally means the amount of time it takes for your eyelids to flutter once. Within this microsecond, within this instant, You create, thaap and you destroy uthaapadaa. Aacharaj means wondrous, beauteous. Your form is beautiful. Roop means form.
Ka-un jaanai chalat tayray anDhi-aaray meh deep. ||1||
Ka-un jaanai. Who knows? Who can truly know? Chalat tayray. Chalat means the way You act, what You do. Who can truly know what You do? Who can truly know Your play? Only You know your play. We have to understand, Guru Arjan Dev Ji is saying here, that we can not understand God, but we can merge into God. Andhi-aaray meh deep. Because God is the light in the darkness. Within the darkness of this world, if you see God in everyone, you will find peace and see the glow.
Khud khasam khalak jahaan alah miharvaan khudaa-ay.
Khud khasam means You are the master. Khalak means creation. Jahaan means world. You are the master of the world. Oh Alah, Oh Waheguru, Oh Raam… Any name you want. You are miharvaan. You are merciful. In all your forms you are merciful.
Dinas rain je tuDh araaDhay so ki-o dojak jaa-ay. ||2||
Dinas rain day and night. The person who does you araadhana, who worships You, praises You, so kio dojak jaa-ay. Dojak means hell. So kio means why. So ki-o dojak jaa-ay. Why would that person go into hell? Now we have to wonder what the world hell means in this context. Each day can be a living hell for someone who sees darkness around them. But for those who see the Light, see the hukam, see the Divine will working through everything, he or she will not go through that pain. They will not feel as if they are in a living hell. They will feel like they are living in heaven on earth.
Ajraa-eel yaar banday jis tayraa aaDhaar.
Ajraa-eel. The messenger of death, the angel of death. Yaar means friend. Banday means person. The person who has the support of God, even death befriends him. If you look at the martyrs of the Sikh tradition, you will see Bhai Maati Das who is being cut in half, yet he feels no pain. Bhai Muni Singh who is cut into bits, and yet doesn’t give up. From the Sufi tradition you see Mansoor Al Hullaj. A sufi killed for his realization. Yet there is a famous Punjabi saying, Suli charr mansoor pukare milde prem hulare ne. As they are crucified mansoor, I felt the love inside me even more. So death becomes their friend.
Gunah us kay sagal aafoo tayray jan daykheh deedaar. ||3||
That person who has your support, his sins are forgiven. Gunah. His sins. Aafoo means forgiven. Tayray jan. your servant. Daykheh deedaar. Your servant, he sees you through everything. Didar means your vision. This line also means: the sins of that person are forgiven, who sees your humble servant.
Dunee-aa cheej filhaal saglay sach sukh tayraa naa-o.
Dunee-aa. This world. Cheej. All the things of this world. Filhaal means they are temporary. Saglay all of them are temporary, none of them are permanent. Sach sukh the true peace, tayraa naa-o only comes from your name, Oh God.
Gur mil naanak boojhi-aa sadaa aykas gaa-o. ||4||4||
Gur mil. Meeting the Guru, Nanak has understood. The thing that Guru Nanak has understood is stated in Japuji Sahib, Guraan ik dayhe bujhaa-ee. Sabhnaa jee-aan kaa ik daataa, so mai visar na jaa-ee (Ang:2-10). The Guru has made me realize, there is One Giver to the whole world, may I never forget Him. Guru ji is saying, I have understood to sing the praises of the One Lord, to sing the praises of the One, that is Ik Ongkar.
May Guru Ji Bless us to see. Bless us to see that One, our Beloved, the Creator, through His creation.
