He has deceit within himself, and so he sees deception in all others; through his deceptions, he is totally ruined. The True Guru’s Will does not enter into his consciousness, and so he wanders around, pursuing his own interests. If He grants His Grace, then Nanak is absorbed into the Word of the Shabad.

FOURTH MEHL: The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya; in the love of duality, their minds are unsteady. Night and day, they are burning; day and night, they are totally ruined by their egotism. Within them, is the total pitch darkness of greed, and no one even approaches them. They themselves are miserable, and they never find peace; they are born, only to die, and die again. O Nanak, the True Lord God forgives those, who focus their consciousness on the Guru’s feet.

PAUREE: That Saint, that devotee, is acceptable, who is loved by God. Those beings are wise, who meditate on the Lord. They eat the food, the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਮਧਿਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
अंतरि अगिआनु भई मति मधिम सतिगुर की परतीति नाही ॥
Anṯar agi▫ān bẖa▫ī maṯ maḏẖim saṯgur kī parṯīṯ nāhī.
He has spiritual ignorance within, and his intellect is dull and dim; he does not place his faith in the True Guru.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਪਟੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਪਟੇ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹੀ ॥
अंदरि कपटु सभु कपटो करि जाणै कपटे खपहि खपाही ॥
Anḏar kapat sabẖ kapto kar jāṇai kapte kẖapėh kẖapāhī.
He has deceit within himself, and so he sees deception in all others; through his deceptions, he is totally ruined.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥
सतिगुर का भाणा चिति न आवै आपणै सुआइ फिराही ॥
Saṯgur kā bẖāṇā cẖiṯ na āvai āpṇai su▫ā▫e firā▫ī.
The True Guru's Will does not enter into his consciousness, and so he wanders around, pursuing his own interests.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
किरपा करे जे आपणी ता नानक सबदि समाही ॥१॥
Kirpā kare je āpṇī ṯā Nānak sabaḏ samāhī.

If He grants His Grace, then Nanak is absorbed into the Word of the Shabad.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਨੂਆ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
मनमुख माइआ मोहि विआपे दूजै भाइ मनूआ थिरु नाहि ॥
Manmukẖ mā▫i▫ā mohi vi▫āpe ḏūjai bẖā▫e manū▫ā thir nāhi.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹਿ ॥
अनदिनु जलत रहहि दिनु राती हउमै खपहि खपाहि ॥
An▫ḏin jalaṯ rahėh ḏin rāṯī ha▫umai kẖapėh kẖapāhi.
Night and day, they are burning; day and night, they are totally ruined by their egotism.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
अंतरि लोभु महा गुबारा तिन कै निकटि न कोई जाहि ॥
Anṯar lobẖ mahā gubārā ṯin kai nikat na ko▫ī jāhi.
Within them, is the total pitch darkness of greed, and no one even approaches them.
ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਦੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
ओइ आपि दुखी सुखु कबहू न पावहि जनमि मरहि मरि जाहि ॥
O▫e āp ḏukẖī sukẖ kabhū na pāvahi janam marėh mar jāhi.
They themselves are miserable, and they never find peace; they are born, only to die, and die again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
नानक बखसि लए प्रभु साचा जि गुर चरनी चितु लाहि ॥२॥
Nānak bakẖas la▫e parabẖ sācẖā jė gur cẖarnī cẖiṯ lāhi.

O Nanak, the True Lord God forgives those, who focus their consciousness on the Guru's feet.

ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
संत भगत परवाणु जो प्रभि भाइआ ॥
Sanṯ bẖagaṯ parvāṇ jo parabẖ bẖā▫i▫ā.
That Saint, that devotee, is acceptable, who is loved by God.
ਸੇਈ ਬਿਚਖਣ ਜੰਤ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
सेई बिचखण जंत जिनी हरि धिआइआ ॥
Se▫ī bicẖkẖaṇ janṯ jinī har ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.
Those beings are wise, who meditate on the Lord.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
अम्रितु नामु निधानु भोजनु खाइआ ॥
Amriṯ nām niḏẖān bẖojan kẖā▫i▫ā.
They eat the food, the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
संत जना की धूरि मसतकि लाइआ ॥
Sanṯ janā kī ḏẖūr masṯak lā▫i▫ā.
They apply the dust of the feet of the Saints to their foreheads.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਹਰਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥
नानक भए पुनीत हरि तीरथि नाइआ ॥२६॥
Nānak bẖa▫e punīṯ har ṯirath nā▫i▫ā.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੪ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਮਧਿਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਪਟੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਪਟੇ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹੀ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
ਸਲੋਕ ਚੌਥੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਧਾਰਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਮੰਦ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਣੀ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਛਲ ਫਰੇਬ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਛਲੀਏ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਛਲ ਫਰੇਬ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਬਿਲਕੁੱਲ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਲਈ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰੇ, ਤਦ ਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਧਿਮ = ਨਿੰਮੀ, ਭੈੜੀ। ਕਪਟੁ = ਧੋਖਾ। ਸੁਆਇ = ਸੁਆਰਥ ਲਈ।੧।
(ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਅਕਲਿ ਹੋਛੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਉਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਦਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ; ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਧੋਖਾ (ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ) ਉਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਧੋਖਾ ਹੀ ਧੋਖਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪ) ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ) ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਹਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।
ਮਃ ੪ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਨੂਆ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹਿ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਦੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
ਚੌਥੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰੇ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੱਚਤ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ। ਦਿਹੁੰ ਰੈਣ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਿਲਕੁੱਲ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਭ ਦਾ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ-ਘੁੱਪ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ। ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਗਮ-ਮਾਰੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ। ਊਹ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ, ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਿਆਪੇ = ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ। ਗੁਬਾਰਾ = ਹਨੇਰਾ। ਨਿਕਟਿ = ਨੇੜੇ।੨।
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ; ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ-ਰੂਪ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ; ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਸਦਾ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਨ, ਤਾਂ ਸੱਚਾ ਹਰੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲਏ।੨।
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
ਪਉੜੀ। ਉਹ ਸਾਧੂ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ, ਭਗਤ ਹਨ ਉਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹਨ।
ਸੇਈ ਬਿਚਖਣ ਜੰਤ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਹਰਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥
ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਸੁਧਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਖਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ। ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਥੀ ਵੰਞਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਚਖਣ = ਸਿਆਣੇ। ਧਿਆਇਆ = ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ। ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇਆ = ਭਾਵ, ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਭੋਜਨ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ)। ਮਸਤਕਿ = ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ। ਭਏ ਪੁਨੀਤ = ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਨਾਇਆ = ਨ੍ਹਾਤੇ ਹਨ।੨੬।
ਉਹੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ-ਰੂਪ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਰੀ (ਦੇ ਭਜਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਤੀਰਥ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੨੬।

FOURTH MEHL: The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya; in the love of duality, their minds are unsteady. Night and day, they are burning; day and night, they are totally ruined by their egotism. Within them, is the total pitch darkness of greed, and no one even approaches them. They themselves are miserable, and they never find peace; they are born, only to die, and die again. O Nanak, the True Lord God forgives those, who focus their consciousness on the Guru’s feet.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਮਧਿਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
अंतरि अगिआनु भई मति मधिम सतिगुर की परतीति नाही ॥
Anṯar agi▫ān bẖa▫ī maṯ maḏẖim saṯgur kī parṯīṯ nāhī.
He has spiritual ignorance within, and his intellect is dull and dim; he does not place his faith in the True Guru.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਪਟੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਪਟੇ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹੀ ॥
अंदरि कपटु सभु कपटो करि जाणै कपटे खपहि खपाही ॥
Anḏar kapat sabẖ kapto kar jāṇai kapte kẖapėh kẖapāhī.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥
सतिगुर का भाणा चिति न आवै आपणै सुआइ फिराही ॥
Saṯgur kā bẖāṇā cẖiṯ na āvai āpṇai su▫ā▫e firā▫ī.
The True Guru's Will does not enter into his consciousness, and so he wanders around, pursuing his own interests.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
किरपा करे जे आपणी ता नानक सबदि समाही ॥१॥
Kirpā kare je āpṇī ṯā Nānak sabaḏ samāhī.

मनमुख माइआ मोहि विआपे दूजै भाइ मनूआ थिरु नाहि ॥
Manmukẖ mā▫i▫ā mohi vi▫āpe ḏūjai bẖā▫e manū▫ā thir nāhi.

An▫ḏin jalaṯ rahėh ḏin rāṯī ha▫umai kẖapėh kẖapāhi.
Night and day, they are burning; day and night, they are totally ruined by their egotism.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
अंतरि लोभु महा गुबारा तिन कै निकटि न कोई जाहि ॥
Anṯar lobẖ mahā gubārā ṯin kai nikat na ko▫ī jāhi.
Within them, is the total pitch darkness of greed, and no one even approaches them.
ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਦੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
ओइ आपि दुखी सुखु कबहू न पावहि जनमि मरहि मरि जाहि ॥
O▫e āp ḏukẖī sukẖ kabhū na pāvahi janam marėh mar jāhi.
They themselves are miserable, and they never find peace; they are born, only to die, and die again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
नानक बखसि लए प्रभु साचा जि गुर चरनी चितु लाहि ॥२॥
Nānak bakẖas la▫e parabẖ sācẖā jė gur cẖarnī cẖiṯ lāhi.

ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
संत भगत परवाणु जो प्रभि भाइआ ॥
Sanṯ bẖagaṯ parvāṇ jo parabẖ bẖā▫i▫ā.
That Saint, that devotee, is acceptable, who is loved by God.
ਸੇਈ ਬਿਚਖਣ ਜੰਤ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
सेई बिचखण जंत जिनी हरि धिआइआ ॥
Se▫ī bicẖkẖaṇ janṯ jinī har ḏẖi▫ā▫i▫ā.
Those beings are wise, who meditate on the Lord.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
अम्रितु नामु निधानु भोजनु खाइआ ॥
Amriṯ nām niḏẖān bẖojan kẖā▫i▫ā.
They eat the food, the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
संत जना की धूरि मसतकि लाइआ ॥
Sanṯ janā kī ḏẖūr masṯak lā▫i▫ā.
They apply the dust of the feet of the Saints to their foreheads.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਹਰਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥
नानक भए पुनीत हरि तीरथि नाइआ ॥२६॥
Nānak bẖa▫e punīṯ har ṯirath nā▫i▫ā.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੪ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਮਧਿਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਪਟੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਪਟੇ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹੀ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
ਸਲੋਕ ਚੌਥੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਧਾਰਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਮੰਦ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਣੀ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਛਲ ਫਰੇਬ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਛਲੀਏ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਛਲ ਫਰੇਬ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਬਿਲਕੁੱਲ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਲਈ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਧਾਰੇ, ਤਦ ਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਧਿਮ = ਨਿੰਮੀ, ਭੈੜੀ। ਕਪਟੁ = ਧੋਖਾ। ਸੁਆਇ = ਸੁਆਰਥ ਲਈ।੧।
(ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਅਕਲਿ ਹੋਛੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਉਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਦਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ; ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਧੋਖਾ (ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ) ਉਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਧੋਖਾ ਹੀ ਧੋਖਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪ) ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ) ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਹਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।

ਚੌਥੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰੇ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੱਚਤ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ। ਦਿਹੁੰ ਰੈਣ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਿਲਕੁੱਲ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਭ ਦਾ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ-ਘੁੱਪ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ। ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਗਮ-ਮਾਰੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ। ਊਹ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ, ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਿਆਪੇ = ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ। ਗੁਬਾਰਾ = ਹਨੇਰਾ। ਨਿਕਟਿ = ਨੇੜੇ।੨।
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ; ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ-ਰੂਪ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ; ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਸਦਾ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਨ, ਤਾਂ ਸੱਚਾ ਹਰੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲਏ।੨।
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
ਪਉੜੀ। ਉਹ ਸਾਧੂ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ, ਭਗਤ ਹਨ ਉਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹਨ।

ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਸੁਧਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਖਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ। ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਥੀ ਵੰਞਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਚਖਣ = ਸਿਆਣੇ। ਧਿਆਇਆ = ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ। ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇਆ = ਭਾਵ, ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਭੋਜਨ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ)। ਮਸਤਕਿ = ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ। ਭਏ ਪੁਨੀਤ = ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਨਾਇਆ = ਨ੍ਹਾਤੇ ਹਨ।੨੬।
ਉਹੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ-ਰੂਪ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਰੀ (ਦੇ ਭਜਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਤੀਰਥ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੨੬।
