He is bound and gagged at the door of the Messenger of Death. He is beaten, and receives terrible punishment. || 1 || THIRD MEHL: They inflict their hatred upon the Saints, and they love the wicked sinners. They find no peace in either this world or the next; they are born only to die, again and again. Their hunger is never satisfied, and they are ruined by duality. The faces of these slanderers are blackened in the Court of the True Lord. O Nanak, without the Naam, they find no shelter on either this shore, or the one beyond. || 2 || PAUREE: Those who meditate on the Lord’s Name, are imbued with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in their minds. For those who worship the One Lord in their conscious minds, there is no other than the One Lord. They alone serve the Lord, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny is written. They continually sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and singing the Glories of the Glorious Lord, they are uplifted. Great is the greatness of the Gurmukhs, who, through the Perfect Guru, remain absorbed in the Lord’s Name. || 17 ||

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਘੁਥਿਆ ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
नानक नावहु घुथिआ हलतु पलतु सभु जाइ ॥
Nānak nāvhu gẖuthi▫ā halaṯ palaṯ sabẖ jā▫e.
O Nanak, forsaking the Name, he loses everything, in this world and the next.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲਇਆ ਮੁਠੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
जपु तपु संजमु सभु हिरि लइआ मुठी दूजै भाइ ॥
Jap ṯap sanjam sabẖ hir la▫i▫ā muṯẖī ḏūjai bẖā▫e.
Chanting, deep meditation and austere self-disciplined practices are all wasted; he is deceived by the love of duality.
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
जम दरि बधे मारीअहि बहुती मिलै सजाइ ॥१॥
Jam ḏar baḏẖe mārī▫ah bahuṯī milai sajā▫e. ||1||
He is bound and gagged at the door of the Messenger of Death. He is beaten, and receives terrible punishment. ||1||

ਸੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਦੁਸਟਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
संता नालि वैरु कमावदे दुसटा नालि मोहु पिआरु ॥
Sanṯā nāl vair kamāvḏe ḏustā nāl moh pi▫ār.
They inflict their hatred upon the Saints, and they love the wicked sinners.
ਅਗੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥
अगै पिछै सुखु नही मरि जमहि वारो वार ॥
Agai picẖẖai sukẖ nahī mar jamėh vāro vār.
They find no peace in either this world or the next; they are born only to die, again and again.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
त्रिसना कदे न बुझई दुबिधा होइ खुआरु ॥
Ŧarisnā kaḏe na bujẖ▫ī ḏubiḏẖā ho▫e kẖu▫ār.
Their hunger is never satisfied, and they are ruined by duality.
ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥
मुह काले तिना निंदका तितु सचै दरबारि ॥
Muh kāle ṯinā ninḏkā ṯiṯ sacẖai ḏarbār.
The faces of these slanderers are blackened in the Court of the True Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
नानक नाम विहूणिआ ना उरवारि न पारि ॥२॥
Nānak nām vihūṇi▫ā nā urvār na pār. ||2||
O Nanak, without the Naam, they find no shelter on either this shore, or the one beyond. ||2||

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
जो हरि नामु धिआइदे से हरि हरि नामि रते मन माही ॥
Jo har nām ḏẖi▫ā▫iḏe se har har nām raṯe man māhī.
Those who meditate on the Lord's Name, are imbued with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in their minds.
ਜਿਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਇਕਸ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
जिना मनि चिति इकु अराधिआ तिना इकस बिनु दूजा को नाही ॥
Jinā man cẖiṯ ik arāḏẖi▫ā ṯinā ikas bin ḏūjā ko nāhī.
For those who worship the One Lord in their conscious minds, there is no other than the One Lord.
ਸੇਈ ਪੁਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਜਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਹੀ ॥
सेई पुरख हरि सेवदे जिन धुरि मसतकि लेखु लिखाही ॥
Se▫ī purakẖ har sevḏe jin ḏẖur masṯak lekẖ likẖāhī.
They alone serve the Lord, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny is written.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਝਾਹੀ ॥
हरि के गुण नित गावदे हरि गुण गाइ गुणी समझाही ॥
Har ke guṇ niṯ gāvḏe har guṇ gā▫e guṇī samjẖāhī.
They continually sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and singing the Glories of the Glorious Lord, they are uplifted.
ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧੭॥
वडिआई वडी गुरमुखा गुर पूरै हरि नामि समाही ॥१७॥
vadi▫ā▫ī vadī gurmukẖā gur pūrai har nām samāhī. ||17||
Great is the greatness of the Gurmukhs, who, through the Perfect Guru, remain absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||17||

ਸਲੋਕ ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਨਾਨਕ, ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ, ਇਨਸਾਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਜਬਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੇ ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਦੂਤ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਉਹ ਕੁੱਟਿਆ ਫਾਂਟਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਘਣੇਰੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਿਰਿ ਲਇਆ = ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸਭ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਸਭ ਖੁੱਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ) ਠੱਗੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ; ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰ ਤੇ ਬੱਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਬੜੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।੧।
ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਸੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਦੁਸਟਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ ਅਗੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਦੂਸ਼ਨ ਲਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਂਬਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੁੰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਏਥੇ ਤੇ ਏਦੂੰ ਮਗਰੋਂ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਆਰਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਕਦਾਚਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੁਝਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੁਸ਼ਨ ਲਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਸੱਚੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ, ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਂ ਇਸ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ (ਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ) ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਲੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ (ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ) ਪਨਾਹ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਉਰਵਾਰਿ = ਉਰਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ।੨।
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੈਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਰਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਘੜੀ ਮੁੜੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ, ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ; ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਢੋਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ)।੨।
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਜਿਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਇਕਸ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
ਪਉੜੀ। ਜਿਹੜੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਜੋ, ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਤੇ ਰਿਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਇਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਹੋਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦੇ।
ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ = ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਚਿਤ ਨਾਲ, ਮਨੋਂ ਚਿਤੋਂ ਪੂਰੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਨਾਲ।
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕਾਗ੍ਰ ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ।
ਸੇਈ ਪੁਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਜਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਹੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਝਾਹੀ ॥ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧੭॥
ਕੇਵਲ ਓਹੀ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਐਸੀ ਲਿਖਤਾਕਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੇ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਆਲਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਗੁਣਵਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮਹਾਨ ਹੈ ਮਹਾਨਤਾ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ। ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਸਤਕਿ = ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ। ਗੁਣੀ = ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ। ਨਾਮਿ = ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ।੧੭।
(ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ (ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ) ਲੇਖ ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਵੱਡਾ ਗੁਣ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੧੭।
