सासि सासि सिमरंति नानक महा अगनि न बिनासनं ॥१॥
Sās sās simranṯ Nānak mahā agan na bināsnaʼn. ||1||

Nānak so ḏẖaṇī ki▫o visār▫i▫o uḏẖrahi jis ḏai nā▫e. ||2||
O Nanak, how could we forget the Master? Through His Name, we are saved. ||2||

ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਰਿ ਨਿੰਮਿਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥
रकतु बिंदु करि निमिआ अगनि उदर मझारि ॥
Rakaṯ binḏ kar nimmi▫ā agan uḏar majẖār.
From egg and sperm, you were conceived, and placed in the fire of the womb.
ਉਰਧ ਮੁਖੁ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਬਿਕਲੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਘੋਰਿ ਗੁਬਾਰਿ ॥
उरध मुखु कुचील बिकलु नरकि घोरि गुबारि ॥
Uraḏẖ mukẖ kucẖīl bikal narak gẖor gubār.
Head downwards, you abided restlessly in that dark, dismal, terrible hell.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਤੂ ਨਾ ਜਲਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
हरि सिमरत तू ना जलहि मनि तनि उर धारि ॥
Har simraṯ ṯū nā jalėh man ṯan ur ḏẖār.
Remembering the Lord, Waheguru Ji in meditation, you were not burnt; enshrine Him in your heart, mind and body.
ਬਿਖਮ ਥਾਨਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਖਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥
बिखम थानहु जिनि रखिआ तिसु तिलु न विसारि ॥
Bikẖam thānahu jin rakẖi▫ā ṯis ṯil na visār.
In that treacherous place, He protected and preserved you; do not forget Him, even for an instant.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਸਹਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਹਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
प्रभ बिसरत सुखु कदे नाहि जासहि जनमु हारि ॥२॥
Parabẖ bisraṯ sukẖ kaḏe nāhi jāsėh janam hār. ||2||
Forgetting God, Waheguru Ji, you shall never find peace; you shall forfeit your life, and depart. ||2||

ਸਲੋਕ। ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਤਾਰ ਜੀਅ ਘੜ, ਸੁਆਮੀ ਇਸ ਘੜਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਰ ਸੁਆਸ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਤੇ ਡਾਢੀ ਅੱਗ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ।
ਜੀਅ ਰਚਨਾ = ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਨਾਵਟ। ਰਚੰਤਿ = ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਸਥਾਪਨੰ = ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ = ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ। ਮਹਾ ਅਗਨਿ = (ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੀ) ਵੱਡੀ ਅੱਗ।੧।
ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਣਤਰ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਥਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੀ) ਵੱਡੀ (ਭਿਆਨਕ) ਅੱਗ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ।੧।
ਮੁਖੁ ਤਲੈ ਪੈਰ ਉਪਰੇ ਵਸੰਦੋ ਕੁਹਥੜੈ ਥਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਧਣੀ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਉਧਰਹਿ ਜਿਸ ਦੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
ਮੂੰਹ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੈਰ ਉਤਾਹਾਂ ਵੱਲ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਕਲੀਨ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਬੱਚ ਗਿਆ ਸੈਂ?
ਤਲੈ = ਹੇਠਾਂ ਨੂੰ। ਕੁਹਥੜੈ ਥਾਇ = ਔਖੇ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ। ਧਣੀ = ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ। ਉਧਰਹਿ = ਬਚਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਜਿਸ ਦੈ ਨਾਇ = ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ।੨।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਦੋਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੀ, ਪੈਰ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਨੂੰ ਸਨ, ਬੜੇ ਔਖੇ ਥਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸੈਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ, ਹੁਣ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ?।੨।
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਰਿ ਨਿੰਮਿਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥ ਉਰਧ ਮੁਖੁ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਬਿਕਲੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਘੋਰਿ ਗੁਬਾਰਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਤੂ ਨਾ ਜਲਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ ਬਿਖਮ ਥਾਨਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਖਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਸਹਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਹਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
ਪਉੜੀ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਤੂੰ ਮਦੀਨ ਦੇ ਆਂਡੇ ਅਤੇ ਮਰਦ ਦੇ ਵੀਰਜ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਪਜਿਆ ਸੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿਕਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੈਂ। ਤੇਰਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੀ, ਤੂੰ ਬੇਚੈਨ ਸੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਮਲੀਣ ਤੇ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਦੋਖਕ ਦੇ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਦਾ ਸੈਂ। ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੈਂ। ਹੁਣ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ, ਦੇਹ ਤੇ ਦਿਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖ। ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਔਖੀ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਭਰ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਨਾਂ ਭੁਲਾ। ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਦਾਚਿਤ ਸੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਆ ਕੇ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਵਨੂੰਗਾ।
ਰਕਤੁ = ਰੱਤ, ਲਹੂ {ਇਸ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ ਦੇ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ (ੁ) ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਕਲ ਤੋਂ ਪੁਲਿੰਗ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਹੈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਲਿੰਗ, ਦੇਖੋ 'ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਆਕਰਣ'}। ਬਿੰਦੁ = ਵੀਰਜ। ਨਿੰਮਿਆ = ਉੱਗਿਆ। ਉਦਰ = ਪੇਟ। ਮਝਾਰਿ = ਵਿਚ। ਉਰਧ = ਉਲਟਾ, ਪੁੱਠਾ। ਕੁਚੀਲ = ਗੰਦਾ। ਬਿਕਲੁ = ਡਰਾਉਣਾ। ਨਰਕਿ = ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ। ਗੁਬਾਰਿ ਨਰਕਿ = ਹਨੇਰੇ ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ। ਮਨਿ = ਮਨ ਵਿਚ। ਤਨਿ = ਤਨ ਵਿਚ। ਉਰ = ਹਿਰਦਾ। ਬਿਖਮ = ਔਖਾ। ਥਾਨਹੁ = ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ।੨।
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ!) (ਮਾਂ ਦੀ) ਰੱਤ ਤੇ (ਪਿਉ ਦੇ) ਵੀਰਜ ਤੋਂ (ਮਾਂ ਦੇ) ਪੇਟ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਉੱਗਿਆ। ਤੇਰਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੀ, ਗੰਦਾ ਤੇ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ ਸੈਂ, (ਮਾਨੋ) ਇਕ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਘੋਰ ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੈਂ। ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੈਂ ਸੜਦਾ-ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਹੁਣ ਭੀ) ਮਨੋਂ ਤਨੋਂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ। ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਔਖੇ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਇਆ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਾਹ ਭੁਲਾ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾਇਆਂ ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, (ਜੇ ਭੁਲਾਇਂਗਾ ਤਾਂ) ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ (ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ) ਹਾਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਵੇਂਗਾ।੨।
